The first phase of the project included the development of a Website, www.entreneuru.org . Unique summer
opportunity for high school students interested in pursuing a career in
forestry and natural resources. The Natural Resources Careers Conference is a week long hands-on
educational program held the last full week in July at the Hickory
Environmental Education Center in Garrett County, MD. The classes are
taught by professionals in the field. It is sponsored by the Maryland
Forestry Boards and Foundation, the Maryland Forest Service, and
Allegany College of Maryland. Steve Resh of Allegany College is the
Curriculum Director. Students can optionally apply and pay for 2
college credits given by Allegany College to students who complete the
entire week of classes and pass an exam.
The goal is to recruit two qualified students from each county in
Maryland plus Baltimore City. Applicants are interviewed and selected
by their local Forestry Boards. The Boards pay for the $300 tuition fee.
A brochure, the curriculum schedule, applications, and more information
can be found on the web at http://www.dnr.state.md.us/forests/nrcareersconf.html.
